Learning About Myself

MyBlueprint is a website that allows students to explore future careers and create a graduation plan. In my Technology 9 class, we have been using this website to learn about ourselves. So today, I will be sharing my results from all 5 Who Am I? surveys?

Interests Survey

After doing my interest survey, I found that my interest type is The Sensei.

This means that am drawn towards sharing and learning knowledge, and am patient, friendly and generous but often prefer to work independently. Since I really like to learn and understand, I am likely to pursue advanced academic degrees and specializations, in areas that interest me.

This also means that I like to work with ideas, information, and people. I like to approach things with a blend of action and thought, and am more lenient towards structure, routine, thinking with my head, and  like to be independent.

My top interest traits are Investigate and Social. These play a role in helping me learn what type(s) of occupations I best suited for.

Investigative occupations would involve working with theories, concepts, information, and ideas. Curiosity, reasoning, logic, research, analysis, and science are things that fall under investigative occupations.

Social occupations revolve around people. These occupations usually include assisting, teaching, healing or serving others. Social occupations can have a focus that ranges from very practical to highly academic outcomes.

I think 3 careers that would match my interest traits are pediatrician, epidemiologist, and family physician. All three of these occupations involve investigating theories, concepts, information, and ideas relating to human health and the human body. They also match my social trait since all three involve healing and serving others. I would enjoy these careers because they involve human health and the human body, and these are things that interest me.

Personality Survey

The personality survey revealed that I am a supervisor. I am extroverted, like to gather information through sensing, make decisions through thinking, and prefer to deal with the outside world through judging.

I think my most valuable out of these is that I make decisions by thinking. This means that I do not make decisions based off of how I feel and am not bias. I also like to be fair, and I think that is important because it is important to do what is right, no matter how it will affect you.

To me, it is important to understand your personality type because you not only learn about yourself, but also find out how you can improve yourself and become a better person. For example, with this survey, I found out that I am a bit too judging, and so I will try to be more open and perceiving.

Learning Style Survey

With the Learning Style survey, I found that I am a visual learner. This means that I learn by looking and seeing and like to take numerous detailed notes, tend to sit in the front, often close my eyes to visualize or remember something, and benefit from colorful illustrations and presentations.

Some study tips that are best suited for visual learners like me include:

  • Underlining or highlighting key ideas in study notes
  • Use graphic organizers such as mind maps, venn diagrams, and webs
  • Pausing and trying to create a mental image in your mind, or pausing and drawing a visual representation
  • Turning concepts into charts and diagrams

I have used one of these tips by pausing and creating a mental image in my mind of what I was learning. It definitely helped me memorize the information faster and study better; during the test, I just tried to remember that image, and I was able to recall the information. I also created a goal for myself, and used the given tips as ways to help me achieve my goal.

I think it is very important to know your learning style because it tells you the best ways for you to study and remember information.  It helps you understand concepts in ways best suited to your learning style(s).

Knowledge Survey

After doing the knowledge survey, I found that my top three subject areas are Physical Education, Social Science, and Science. Topics that these subjects cover are sports, wellness, health sciences, history, geography, law, politics, biology, chemistry, and physics.

Based of of my top subject areas, my career cluster in Health Science. Health Science involves the science of dealing with human and animal health, such as diagnosing illnesses, providing treatments, and researching

Since Health Science is my career cluster, it means that I am best suited for an occupation in Health Science, and probably like those types of occupations. I agree with this because I really enjoy health science, and more specifically the human body, human health, and diagnosing health issues in humans. Dealing human health seems to interest me, mainly since the human body is such complex system made up of many smaller systems. Also, being healthy is very important, and if I help people remain or become healthy, I will feel as though as I am doing my part giving back to this world.

Some occupations that match my career cluster are family physician, genetic counselor, and psychiatrist. I would like being a family physician because I would have to deal with extremely dangerous health issues, but will still diagnose and deal with a variety of health issues. I would also like being a genetic counselor because your genes sort of make up how you are, and understanding genes and how they work, interests me. On the other hand, I would not like being a psychiatrist because you have to deal with a mental issues and I do not think I will be able to handle that.

Motivation Survey

The final survey I did was  the motivation survey. This survey revealed that my top two motivation factors are support and achievement. This means that I seek out the tools, education and support that will help me get a task done to my satisfaction, and need to find a place that values my contributions, supports me in every way possible and provides me with strong leaders and managers. I also like being able to feel that I have completed something, no matter in how long of a time span.

This is different from what I thought my top motivation factor was, which I thought was working conditions, which basically meant that I was motivated when I was in a place that is interesting and has fantastic teammates. I also thought that I was motivated by recognition, but that did not seem to be what the survey thought.

I think knowing my top motivation factors will help me achieve my goals because then I will know what I need to do to encourage myself to do something. This will also help me pick a career, since I will know if I will be motivated to do the things I need to do at an occupation.

Now, I want to ask you something. What type of learner are you? If you don’t know, it’s ok, you can visit EducationPlanner to find out.

This is what I found out about myself using the surveys at MyBlueprint. Visit my next blog post to learn about two careers I am considering.

  1. It sounds like you were able to learn a little bit about yourself and also confirm some thing you already know about yourself. Hopefully this helps you when you are thinking about a career that might be suitable for you in the future.
